ワシントン在住の Sheila. 1969年の夏（ウッドストックの直前、アポロ月着陸の最中）、世界20カ国くらいの高校生と一緒に３週間、アメリカ東部を回ったとき、「シャペロン」として一緒にバスに乗った、当時の大学生のお姉さんです。（今は60代なかばでしょう）

I'm like the rest of us who are on the safe side, trying to be helpful, hoping for the dreadful-deadful nightmare to calm down some.
The crust of the earth keeps moving regularly, and calamities like this M8.9 earthquake are perhaps unavoidable every now and then. What do seem avoidable are human-caused killings. I'm also praying for the best for people of Libya and other embattled regions of the earth.

人間は、自然が起こせない規模の殺戮も起こしますが、でも、これから日本にはたくさんの愛が注がれるでしょう。
そういうときの英語が、多くの日本人に伝わるといいですね。
保安院の人の、よくわからない日本語を訳してくれた人はたいへんでした。残念なことに、"A meltdown may have occurred." という情報が海外に伝わったため、CNNのリポーターが、日本政府は一方でsafe, contained, と言いながら矛盾している、といって騒いでいました。 "may or may not have occurred" という英語で海外に伝わっていたら、controdictory（矛盾する） とは言われなかったでしょうに。このあたりのニュアンス、中学ではむずかしくても、高校生には教えておいたほうがいいと思いました。
それにしても聞いていてイライラする原子力の専門家。CNNにチャンネルを回すと、こちらの説明は端的で要領を得ていますよ。
